Excavator clay sets hard when wetted and dried, so tunnels and ledges hold their shape and nothing runs loose across the floor. That makes it the tidier option and the easier one to get right. Bioactive soil stays workable, so the animal can keep re digging, and a living clean up crew processes waste rather than you removing it. Clay is a landscape the dragon uses; bioactive is a system you maintain. Both avoid the loose particulate problem, provided you set them up as intended rather than tipping either straight from the bag as a dry layer.

Mix it with water, shape it, and let it dry completely before the animal goes back in, which takes longer than most people expect and must not be rushed with the basking lamp alone. Why do bearded dragons dig?
Digging is normal behaviour for the species, used for thermoregulation, shelter and, in females, for laying eggs. A female dragon may dig persistently when gravid even without having been near a male, since they can produce infertile eggs. Persistent digging combined with restlessness, weight change or loss of appetite in a female is worth a reptile vet appointment, because egg binding is a serious condition.
Is dust from these substrates a problem?
It can be during setup, so mix clay outside the enclosure and let it settle before the animal returns. Once cured, clay produces little dust. Bioactive mixes are usually damp enough not to be dusty. Persistent airborne dust matters because respiratory infections are a common problem in this species and the signs, including open mouth breathing away from the basking spot, mucus and clicking, need veterinary attention.
Can I mix substrate types in one enclosure?
Yes, and many keepers do, for example tile under the basking area for heat retention and traction with a deeper diggable section at the cool end. It gives you the enrichment without putting loose material where the animal eats. Keep the feeding area on the solid section so nothing is swallowed with the food.
